The Charlotte region continues to attract major investments, and a new expansion in Catawba County is the latest sign of continued economic growth.
Prysmian, a global leader in energy and digital connectivity solutions, has announced plans to invest more than $1 billion in its Catawba County operations, creating 385 new jobs and expanding its manufacturing campus by nearly 1 million square feet.
The project is expected to strengthen the region's role in advanced manufacturing while bringing new employment opportunities to the area.
A Major Expansion
The expansion will take place at Prysmian's facility in Claremont, approximately 30 miles north of Charlotte.
Plans include a new glass manufacturing facility and upgrades to existing buildings that will help double the plant's fiber-optic manufacturing capacity. In total, the company expects to add approximately 975,000 square feet to its current campus.
The investment will support Prysmian's production of fiber-optic cables and other technologies used for power grids, renewable energy projects, and high-speed internet infrastructure.
385 New Jobs
One of the biggest benefits of the project will be the creation of 385 new positions.
The jobs are expected to pay an average annual salary of approximately $60,870, above Catawba County's current average wage of $56,937. State officials estimate the new positions could generate more than $23.4 million in annual payroll for the region.
Beyond the direct jobs created, a large expansion like this can also support additional activity for local businesses, restaurants, services, and surrounding communities.
What This Could Mean for the Region
Major investments and job creation can have a ripple effect across a growing region.
As new employment opportunities become available, more workers may choose to live closer to their jobs or relocate to the area. This can increase demand for housing, retail, transportation, and other community services.
For the Charlotte region, continued investment from major employers reinforces the area's position as an important center for manufacturing, technology, energy, and connectivity.
Another Sign of Charlotte's Continued Growth
Charlotte's growth isn't limited to Uptown or the city's immediate suburbs. Communities throughout the surrounding region are attracting new businesses, investments, and residents.
The Prysmian expansion is another example of how economic development is reaching communities outside the city while strengthening the broader Charlotte metropolitan area.
As companies continue to invest in the region and create new career opportunities, the demand for places to live and the need for continued infrastructure and community development will likely remain important considerations.
Looking Ahead
The $1 billion Prysmian expansion represents more than a major manufacturing investment. It is another indication of the economic momentum happening throughout the Charlotte region and surrounding communities.
With 385 new jobs, nearly 1 million square feet of additional manufacturing space, and a significant investment in the local economy, the project could have a lasting impact on Catawba County and the broader region.
As Charlotte and its surrounding communities continue to grow, developments like this are worth watching—not only for the jobs they create, but for how they can shape the communities and housing markets around them.
